As we look back on the past year, within our fields of interest, I have to say that the recent restoration of the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris has been the absolute highlight. A stunning achievement and a glorious result - literally throwing new light onto our understanding of this medieval space.Earlier restorations were carried out, famously, under the aegis of Violet le Duc in the 19th century. One of these involved the ironwork on the side doors. This iron scrollwork and the two blacksmiths involved - Biscornet in the 14th century and Pierre Boulanger in the 19th century - is the stuff of legends.
