Exeter Cathedral is in need of restoration funds. The Rev Stuart Huntley is going to abseil (rappel) down its tower. He will be doing this in medieval gear! A skeleton, that is quite possibly the real Charles de Batz-Castelmore, aka ‘D’Artagnan’, has been discovered beneath the floor of a church in Maastricht.A musket ball—consistent with the wound that killed him, and a 17th-century coin have also been found in the grave.Immortalized as the fourth musketeer by Alexandre Dumas, D’Artagnan was a very real person, famed for his daring deeds in the service of Louis XIV and killed during the Siege of Maastricht in 1673. DNA results are currently pending in Munich.The skeleton was found exactly where the altar would have stood in 1673. Only royalty or high-ranking heroes personally favored by the King were granted the honor of being buried under the altar. Given that Louis XIV famously loved D'Artagnan and held a personal Mass for him after he fell, the location of the bones is, circumstantially, a strong argument for it being him.
